Australia's labour market continues to exhibit strength, but the persistent skills gap across various sectors poses an ongoing economic challenge, according to the latest quarterly report released by Jobs and Skills Australia for March 2023.

The report highlights that approximately 92% of total employment growth in the past year has occurred in occupations where some level of post-secondary school qualifications is typically required. Additionally, around two-thirds of total employment has been in occupations where Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications serve as the primary pathway.

While there has been a slight improvement in the likelihood of employers filling advertised vacancies, nationally there are still occupations that face difficulties in finding suitable candidates. Construction Trades Workers, Automotive and Engineering Trades Workers, Electrotechnology and Telecommunications Trades Workers, and Health Professionals are among the occupations experiencing challenges in recruitment.

Regional areas, in particular, continue to grapple with skills shortages in critical fields such as health and engineering. Employers in these areas consistently report a lower likelihood of filling vacancies and receive fewer applicants per vacancy compared to their counterparts in capital cities. The demand for roles such as General Practitioners and Resident Medical Officers is especially acute in regional areas, surpassing the pressures felt in the same occupations in capital cities.

While skills shortages persist, the report also highlights positive indicators in terms of full-time employment growth and improvements for the long-term unemployed. In a noteworthy development, the number of long-term unemployed individuals has decreased by over 11,000, marking the lowest figure recorded since 2009. The sustained period of low employment has led to better outcomes for the long-term unemployed and the underemployed, despite a slight increase in the overall unemployment rate to 3.7% in April 2023.

Addressing the skills gap and promoting a more inclusive and resilient labour market remains a priority for policymakers and industry stakeholders. Efforts to bridge the divide between job requirements and available skills will be crucial in sustaining Australia's economic growth and ensuring a prosperous future for the workforce.

As the country navigates these challenges, ongoing investments in education, vocational training, and targeted support for regional areas can help narrow the skills gap, strengthen employment prospects, and foster greater opportunities for individuals across Australia.
