IRCC Introduces New Open Work Permit Options
In a move to facilitate smoother transitions to permanent residency, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has unveiled a new temporary policy enabling certain Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates to apply for open work permits (OWPs).
Key Points:
The policy, effective from August 11, 2024, until December 31, 2024, aims to support temporary residents already contributing to Canada's economy.
Eligible candidates must have a job offer, a valid work permit, or a work permit expired on or after May 7th.
They also require a support letter from their province or territory, confirming their placement in an Expression of Interest pool or application inventory.
Who Qualifies?
The policy covers three scenarios:
Individuals with a valid work permit who have applied for a new one and have a support letter and job offer.
Those whose work permit expired after May 7th, have applied for a new one or an extension, and have a support letter and job offer.
Those authorized to work under specific regulations on May 7th, with a pending or approved work permit extension application, a support letter, and a job offer.
Detailed eligibility criteria can be found on the IRCC website.
IRCC's Rationale
This policy aligns with IRCC's goal of adjusting the ratio of temporary to permanent residents. By assisting provinces and territories in transitioning eligible temporary residents through their PNPs, Canada aims to retain skilled workers already meeting critical labor market needs and offer them a clearer path to permanent residency.
This initiative underscores Canada's commitment to attracting and retaining global talent while providing a more supportive environment for those aspiring to build a future in the country.
