In a recent development, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that it will be sending invitations to apply (ITAs) under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in 2025. This marks a significant shift from the initial announcement in January 2025, where IRCC had stated that no new invitations would be issued this year and that it would continue processing applications from the 2024 intake.
Invitation Process for 2025
The new announcement is a welcome update for foreign nationals who submitted an interest to sponsor form under the PGP back in 2020. While IRCC has not provided a specific timeline for when the invitations will be sent, it has promised to release more details in the coming months.
IRCC employs a lottery system to randomly select potential sponsors from the PGP pool. Until now, all invitations under the current PGP program have been exclusively issued to individuals who submitted their interest in 2020. The intake for the PGP has remained closed since then, and there is no confirmation yet on when it might reopen.
Alternative Option: The Super Visa
For Canadian citizens and permanent residents who have not been able to sponsor their parents and grandparents through the PGP, the Super Visa program remains a viable alternative. The Super Visa allows eligible relatives to visit and stay in Canada for extended periods.
Super Visas are valid for up to 10 years and typically permit multiple entries into Canada. Holders of the Super Visa can stay for up to five years at a time and may extend their stay by an additional two years. Sponsors must meet minimum income requirements, and applicants must secure health insurance for the duration of their stay.
Notably, the Canadian government has recently relaxed health insurance requirements for the Super Visa, offering applicants greater flexibility in securing coverage.
