September 20, 2023 — Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) took a significant step to bolster the Canadian transportation sector by conducting its first-ever Express Entry draw specifically targeting transport occupations. The draw, which occurred on September 20, saw IRCC invite 1,000 candidates with work experience in transport occupations to apply for permanent residence in Canada.
In this groundbreaking draw, candidates needed to meet a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 435 to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA). The introduction of category-based selection draws for Express Entry candidates aims to address an urgent labour shortage within the transport sector, aligning with Canada's commitment to strengthening its economy and supply chains.
Minister of Transport Pablo Rodriguez emphasized the significance of this initiative, highlighting the critical role that professionals in transport occupations play in Canada's economy and daily life. By targeting these sectors—such as truck drivers, pilots, aviation mechanical engineers, and seafarers—IRCC seeks to fill vacancies and promote economic growth while enhancing the resilience of supply chains.
This marks the second Express Entry draw of the week, with the previous draw occurring on an all-program basis. However, the recent draw is the first category-based selection round dedicated to transport occupations, signifying Canada's proactive approach to address labour shortages in key industries.
While IRCC conducted numerous Express Entry draws this summer following the introduction of category-based selection rounds, the pause in draws since August 15 left many candidates awaiting invitations without explanation.
