The demand for family migration in Australia has significantly outpaced the number of available places, posing a challenge for prospective applicants. With the country experiencing substantial growth in its migrant population, which has risen from 22 percent to nearly 30 percent of the total population since 1990, the supply of family migration spots has not kept up with the increasing demand.

Under the 2022-23 Migration Program, a total of 52,500 places have been allocated for the Family visa program. This includes 40,500 places for partners, 8,500 for parents, 3,000 for children, and 500 for other family visa categories.

However, it's important to note that the Family program is not the sole avenue for family members to enter Australia. A significant number of "family entrants" now come through other visa streams, particularly as secondary applicants in the Skilled stream. These individuals are counted as part of those programs. In the previous year, out of the 89,063 places available in the permanent skilled migrant stream, a staggering 48,041 spots were filled by secondary applicants.

While Australia's family migration intake remains relatively generous compared to many other countries, the growing demand and limited available places highlight the need for a balanced approach. The government faces the challenge of managing the increasing number of applicants while maintaining a sustainable immigration system that aligns with the country's economic and social objectives.

It is essential for potential applicants to stay informed about the latest updates and policies concerning family migration to Australia, as changes in regulations and priorities may impact the application process and eligibility criteria.
