If you are applying for a skilled migration visa to Australia, you may need to undergo a skills assessment by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). The ACS is the professional association for the ICT sector in Australia, and it assesses the skills and qualifications of ICT professionals who want to migrate to Australia.
The ACS issues a result letter via email at the completion of an ACS skills assessment. This letter is an important document that can be submitted as evidence of a skills assessment to the Department of Home Affairs, the Australian government agency that manages immigration and citizenship.
But what does the ACS result letter mean, and how can you understand it? Here are some key points to help you interpret your ACS result letter.
Section 1: Suitability Outcome
The first section of the ACS result letter states the suitability outcome under the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) code chosen by the applicant. The ANZSCO code is a six-digit number that identifies a specific occupation in the ICT sector, such as software engineer, network analyst, or web developer.
The suitability outcome can be one of the following:
- Suitable: This means that the applicant has met the ACS criteria for the nominated occupation and is eligible for a skills assessment.
- Not Suitable: This means that the applicant has not met the ACS criteria for the nominated occupation and is not eligible for a skills assessment.
- Not Assessed: This means that the applicant has not provided sufficient information or documentation for the ACS to make an assessment.
Section 2: ICT Qualifications
The second section of the ACS result letter reports on the ICT qualifications of the applicant and their Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) comparability and ICT content. The AQF is a national system that defines the levels and types of qualifications in Australia, such as certificates, diplomas, bachelor degrees, and master degrees.
The ACS only reports on the qualifications that are assessed as suitable ICT qualifications, meaning that they have a sufficient amount of ICT content and are recognised by the ACS. Qualifications that are assessed as insufficient in ICT content, not recognised, or not an ICT qualification are not reported in a suitable ACS result letter.
The ACS also compares the ICT qualifications to the AQF levels and indicates whether they have a major, minor, or no major in computing. For example, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from a foreign university may be assessed as comparable to an AQF Bachelor Degree with a Major in Computing.
Section 3: Skill Level Requirement Met Date
The third section of the ACS result letter shows the skill level requirement met date, which is determined by the ACS suitability criteria. The suitability criteria are the minimum requirements that the applicant must meet to be assessed as suitable for the nominated occupation. The criteria vary depending on the ANZSCO code, the AQF level, and the ICT content of the qualifications.
The skill level requirement met date is the date when the applicant has met the suitability criteria based on their qualifications and work experience. All relevant work experience completed after the skill level requirement met date is considered as skilled employment and eligible for points under the skilled migration points test.
The work experience required to meet the suitability criteria is not included as skilled employment and not eligible for points under the skilled migration points test. The ACS assessment process will seek to find the earliest skill level requirement met date possible for each assessment.
Section 4: Work Experience
The fourth section of the ACS result letter displays all the work experience of the applicant that is assessed at an ICT professional level and closely related to the nominated ANZSCO code. The work experience is reported in terms of dates, position, employer, and country of employment. The employment dates can only be calculated until the date of submission.
The ACS reports the country of employment as either Australia or Outside Of Australia. Work experience in Australia may have different implications for the visa application than work experience outside of Australia.
Work experience that is assessed as unsuitable is also displayed in this section with the reason why it was not accepted. Some common scenarios for unsuitable work experience are:
- Concurrent Employment: This occurs when one employment period is performed at the same time as another employment episode. Only one episode of employment can be accepted at any one time.
- Not Closely Related to the Nominated ANZSCO: This occurs when the duties of the work experience are not relevant to the nominated occupation based on the information provided in the documentation.
- Not Assessable due to Insufficient Documentation: This occurs when the documentation provided does not meet the requirements as per the Skills Assessment Guidelines or is not sufficient to meet the assessment criteria.
- Not Assessable due to Insufficient Detail: This occurs when the documentation provided does not contain enough information for the ACS to make an assessment.
Result Letter Questions
Applicants who wish to query the outcome of the assessment can contact the ACS via email at assessment@acs.org.au to discuss the result quoting their Application ID reference number.
