By Sanaya Jindal May 24, 2023

Sydney, May 24 - India and Australia have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in the field of mobility and migration by signing the Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement. The agreement, aimed at facilitating the orderly movement of students, researchers, professionals, academics, and others, was exchanged during a joint press briefing addressed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese in Sydney.

During the briefing, Prime Minister Modi announced the signing of the Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement, highlighting its significance in strengthening the "living bridge" between the two nations and benefitting their people. Prime Minister Albanese also expressed his pleasure at the agreement, emphasizing that it will promote the exchange of students, graduates, researchers, and business people, while enhancing cooperation in preventing people smuggling.

The newly established India-Australia Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement (MMPA) is tailored specifically for India and aims to foster two-way mobility between the countries for students, graduates, academic researchers, and business people. The agreement, as per the official release, will facilitate mobility provisions and introduce a skilled pathway known as the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early Professionals Scheme (MATES) specifically designed for India.

In another development highlighting the deepening ties between the two nations, Australia announced its plan to establish a new Consulate-General in Bengaluru. This announcement came during the joint press briefing, where Prime Minister Albanese revealed that the Bengaluru Consulate-General would serve as a vital connection between Australian businesses and India's thriving digital and innovation ecosystem. The new establishment in Bengaluru will mark the fifth diplomatic presence of Australia in India.

The partnership agreement and the establishment of the Consulate-General reflect the shared commitment of India and Australia to strengthen bilateral relations, promote people-to-people ties, and encourage collaboration in various sectors. As the mobility and migration landscape evolves, this agreement will contribute to the facilitation of mobility, fostering greater exchange and cooperation between the two countries.

With these developments, India and Australia are poised to deepen their partnership and explore new avenues of collaboration, benefiting individuals, businesses, and the overall bilateral relationship.
