The Northern Territory (NT) government has announced the opening of its online portal for skilled migration nomination applications, offering a pathway for skilled workers to live and work in the region.
Onshore and Offshore Opportunities
While onshore applicants can apply for both the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) and the Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) visa, offshore applicants are currently limited to the subclass 491 visa.
Minimum Requirements for All Applicants
All applicants, regardless of their location, must meet the following criteria set by the Department of Home Affairs:
Age: Under 45 years old at the time of nomination.
Skills Assessment: A positive skills assessment from a relevant Australian authority for the nominated occupation.
English Language Proficiency: A minimum score of "competent" English (equivalent to IELTS 6.0 in each band) or higher, unless otherwise specified.
Points Test: A score of 65 or higher on the skilled migration points test.
Additional Requirements for Offshore Applicants
Offshore applicants must also fulfill specific NT nomination criteria:
Work Experience: At least two years of post-qualification work experience in the nominated occupation within the last five years (with possible additional requirements for certain occupations).
Genuine Commitment: Demonstrated commitment to living and working in the NT long-term.
Financial Capacity: Declared financial ability to settle in the NT.
Stream Eligibility: Meeting the criteria of one of the three streams: Priority Occupation Stream, NT Family Stream, or NT Job Offer Stream.
Offshore Streams
Priority Occupation Stream: Requires a full skills assessment in an occupation listed on the Northern Territory Offshore Migration Occupations List (NTOMOL), with potential additional work experience requirements.
NT Family Stream: Requires having a family member residing in the NT for at least 12 months and willing to provide settlement support.
NT Job Offer Stream: Requires a verifiable job offer from an NT business operating for at least 12 months.
Commitment to the NT
Successful nominees must commit to living and working in the NT in their nominated or closely related occupation for at least three years from the visa grant.
Financial Capacity
Applicants are expected to be financially self-sufficient upon arrival in the NT. The NT government has provided guidance on minimum net asset values based on family composition.
