Two years ago, Ontario took a significant step by passing a law that prohibited certain non-health professions from requiring Canadian work experience for licensing. Now, the province is extending this principle to job postings, signaling a commitment to creating a more inclusive job market.


The move is particularly timely as it comes amid discussions about historic labor shortages in the region. The government is not only focused on eliminating barriers but is also taking steps to improve transparency in the hiring process. Piccini revealed that the upcoming legislation would include a requirement for employers to disclose salary ranges in job postings, providing job seekers with crucial information.


During the announcement, Shanika Niwanthi, an immigrant with a Master of Business Administration and a decade of corporate human resources experience, shared her journey of initially facing underemployment. She stressed the importance of eliminating systematic barriers faced by newcomers and hailed the announcement as a positive step forward.


However, not everyone is convinced that the ban alone will address the broader issues. NDP MPP Doly Begum raised concerns about the effectiveness of the ban in helping immigrants secure jobs. She emphasized that Canadian experience often acts as a covert requirement, and the real challenges lie in discrimination and systemic barriers.


Begum suggested that newcomers need comprehensive support, including bridging programs, practice-ready assessment initiatives, and funding for training. While acknowledging the significance of the ban, she urged a more holistic approach to tackle the root causes of employment challenges faced by immigrants.
