Ontario is set to welcome more newcomers in 2024 as the province receives an increased allocation of 21,500 nominations for its Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). This represents a significant jump of 5,000 nominations compared to 2023’s allotment.
The increase follows discussions held last November at the Federation of Ministers Responsible for Immigration (FMRI) meeting. Provincial and territorial immigration ministers met with federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller to address the impact of immigration on their jurisdictions.
This trend aligns with national plans. Canada aims to welcome 110,000 permanent residents through the PNP in 2024, surpassing the number expected through the federal Express Entry program. This reflects the growing role provinces play in managing immigration streams.
While other provinces haven't made their allocations public, Ontario's announcement highlights a broader shift towards increased PNP allocations. The November FMRI meeting also endorsed a multi-year plan, allowing provinces to better plan infrastructure for both existing residents and newcomers. Ontario, however, hasn't disclosed its plans for future allocations.
Provincial Draws Update
The news comes alongside recent provincial immigration draws:
British Columbia: On April 3rd, BC invited 83 candidates across various categories, with minimum scores ranging from 90 to 130.
Alberta: Alberta issued invitations to 48 healthcare professionals with job offers in the province. A minimum CRS score of 300 was required.
Prince Edward Island: PEI held its first draw of April, inviting 66 candidates in healthcare, manufacturing, and early childhood education sectors.
