Saskatchewan Welcomes Skilled Newcomers in Healthcare and Agriculture

By Jessica Thakur, September 11 2024

The Government of Saskatchewan has launched two new Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) pathways under the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP), specifically targeting skilled newcomers in the healthcare and agriculture sectors. Announced on August 30th, this initiative aims to address labor shortages and support key industries driving the province's economy.

Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison emphasized the importance of aligning the immigration program with Saskatchewan's evolving needs. "With labor shortages prevalent across the country, these new pathways and streamlined credential recognition will empower Saskatchewan employers to access the workforce they need for growth," he stated.

New Pathways for Healthcare and Agriculture Talent

The Agriculture Talent pathway focuses on addressing the growing demand for skilled workers in the agriculture sector, a cornerstone of Saskatchewan's economy. In 2023 alone, the province exported over $3.2 billion worth of key crop products. This pathway seeks to attract individuals with the expertise to fill in-demand and emerging roles in agriculture.

The Health Talent Pathway complements Saskatchewan's Health Human Resources action plan, consolidating all healthcare recruitment efforts under the SINP into a single, streamlined stream. This approach aims to facilitate the arrival of much-needed healthcare professionals to support the province's healthcare system.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for these new pathways varies depending on the specific stream and individual circumstances. Both pathways require candidates to meet a baseline of criteria, including language proficiency, education, and work experience relevant to their intended occupation. They must also demonstrate their intention to live and work in Saskatchewan and hold a valid job offer from a Saskatchewan employer.

The Agriculture Talent Stream requires a minimum language score of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4, secondary school completion, and at least one year of relevant work experience. Candidates also need a SINP Job Approval Letter from their employer.

The Health Talent Stream's eligibility criteria depend on whether the candidate has an Express Entry profile. Non-Express Entry candidates need a CLB 5 language score and specific work experience, while Express Entry candidates must have a CLB 7 score and one year of high-skilled work experience.

Saskatchewan's Growing Appeal

Saskatchewan welcomed 7,350 newcomers through the SINP in 2023 and has been allocated 8,000 nominations for 2024. The province anticipates nearly 20,000 newcomers by the end of 2025, when the allocation is set to increase to 8,500.

The province's growing popularity among newcomers is attributed to factors such as a lower cost of living, competitive tax rates, and the Graduate Retention Program, which refunds up to $20,000 in tuition fees for eligible graduates who reside and work in Saskatchewan.

These new PNP pathways further solidify Saskatchewan's commitment to attracting and retaining skilled individuals who can contribute to its vibrant communities and thriving economy.
