The number of visa applications to the European Union (EU) and Schengen Associated Countries reached 7.5 million in 2022, an increase of 258% from 2021. The increase was driven by a number of factors, including the easing of travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the strong economic recovery in the EU, and the growing popularity of the Schengen Area as a tourist destination.
The majority of visa applications were for short-stay visas, which allow for stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period. The top five countries of origin for short-stay visa applicants were:

The majority of long-stay visa applications were for study visas, which allow students to study in the EU for a period of one year or more. The top five countries of origin for long-stay visa applicants were:

The increase in visa applications is a positive sign for the EU economy. The tourism industry is a major driver of economic growth in the EU, and the increase in visa applications suggests that more people are planning to visit the EU in the coming years. The increase in long-stay visa applications is also a positive sign, as it suggests that more people are choosing to study and work in the EU.
The EU is committed to welcoming visitors from all over the world. The increase in visa applications is a testament to the attractiveness of the EU as a destination for travel, study, and work.
